Introduction

Pronominal verbs of the 2nd and 3rd groups work the same way as those of the 1st group: they are conjugated with a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous, se) that refers to the subject. The difference lies in the conjugation of the verb itself, which follows the rules of the 2nd and 3rd groups.

Reminder: Verbs of the 2nd group have an infinitive ending in -ir and a present participle ending in -issant (e.g., finir → finissant). Verbs of the 3rd group include all other irregular verbs.

Formation of Pronominal Verbs in the Present

To conjugate a pronominal verb of the 2nd and 3rd groups in the present tense:

1. Place the corresponding reflexive pronoun before the verb
2. Conjugate the verb according to its group's rules

Example with "se réunir" (2nd group)

Example with "se battre" (3rd group)

Examples of Second Group Pronominal Verbs

• Se réunir: Je me réunis, tu te réunis, il/elle se réunit, nous nous réunissons, vous vous réunissez, ils/elles se réunissent
• Se réjouir: Je me réjouis, tu te réjouis, il/elle se réjouit, nous nous réjouissons, vous vous réjouissez, ils/elles se réjouissent
• S'enrichir: Je m'enrichis, tu t'enrichis, il/elle s'enrichit, nous nous enrichissons, vous vous enrichissez, ils/elles s'enrichissent
• S'agrandir: Je m'agrandis, tu t'agrandis, il/elle s'agrandit, nous nous agrandissons, vous vous agrandissez, ils/elles s'agrandissent

Examples of Third Group Pronominal Verbs

• Se battre: Je me bats, tu te bats, il/elle se bat, nous nous battons, vous vous battez, ils/elles se battent
• Se plaindre: Je me plains, tu te plains, il/elle se plaint, nous nous plaignons, vous vous plaignez, ils/elles se plaignent
• Se mettre: Je me mets, tu te mets, il/elle se met, nous nous mettons, vous vous mettez, ils/elles se mettent
• S'inscrire: Je m'inscris, tu t'inscris, il/elle s'inscrit, nous nous inscrivons, vous vous inscrivez, ils/elles s'inscrivent

Negative Form

In the negative form, "ne" is placed before the reflexive pronoun and "pas" after the verb:

• Je ne me réunis pas avec eux.
• Tu ne te bats pas pour rien.
• Il ne s'inscrit pas au cours.
• Nous ne nous plaignons pas souvent.

Interrogative Form

In the interrogative form, you can use:

• Intonation: Tu te réjouis de cette nouvelle ?
• Est-ce que: Est-ce que vous vous réunissez demain ?
• Inversion: Te bats-tu pour tes idées ?

Important Particularities

• S'asseoir has two possible conjugations in the present:
  - Je m'assieds, tu t'assieds, il s'assied, nous nous asseyons, vous vous asseyez, ils s'asseyent
  - Je m'assois, tu t'assois, il s'assoit, nous nous assoyons, vous vous assoyez, ils s'assoient
• Se taire (conjugated like "plaire"): Je me tais, tu te tais, il se tait, nous nous taisons, vous vous taisez, ils se taisent
• S'enfuir (conjugated like "fuir"): Je m'enfuis, tu t'enfuis, il s'enfuit, nous nous enfuyons, vous vous enfuyez, ils s'enfuient
