Number Agreement Rules
- Vingt (twenty) and cent (hundred) take an 's' in the plural when they are multiplied and not followed by another number:
- quatre-vingts (eighty)
- deux cents (two hundred)
- But we write:
- quatre-vingt-un (eighty-one)
- deux cent un (two hundred and one)
- Million and milliard are nouns and always take an 's' in the plural:
- deux millions (two million)
- trois milliards (three billion)
Invariable Numbers
In French, the only truly invariable number is: thousand : It always remains singular, even when multiplied.
Examples:
- deux mille - two thousand
- trois mille - three thousand
Roman Numerals
Roman numerals are a number system that uses letters from the Latin alphabet. Here are the main symbols:
